Some 200,000 elephants roam this wild trans-frontier corridor, and we&#39;ve timed our safari for the height of this epic migration. Our phenomenally knowledgeable safari guides will take us into rich gamelands unknown to most travelers. We&#39;ll encounter massive herds of elephants and plenty of other wildlife including lion, rare sable antelope, African painted dog, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, and more. Our guides are the pioneers of Zimbabwe&#39;s innovative community-based conservation program, which engages local communities in protecting the wildlife on their own lands by ensuring that they benefit economically from safaris. Our activities on this great journey are as unique as our lodgings, as we explore on foot, by 4WD vehicle, by canoe, from an underground &#8220;look up&#8221; hide, and even by mountain bike. From our first safari camp, Camp Kuzuma in Botswana&#39;s northern Chobe region, we don&#39;t even need to go out looking for wildlife&mdash;it will come to us at the camp&#39;s fantastic waterhole, a magnet for elephant, buffalo, antelope, sable, giraffe, lion, and elusive leopard. At Nehimba Lodge, a mecca for thirsty pachyderms in the exceptionally diverse landscape of Hwange National Park, we might see as many as 500 elephants a day right at our lodge&#39;s waterhole. At Jozibanini (&#8220;Jozi&#8221; for short), we&#39;ll savor Zimbabwe&#39;s most remote safari camp. Here we can even sleep under the stars, nestled on the viewing decks of our raised tents. We finish this amazing safari in style with a spectacular charter flight to Victoria Falls, where we stay at&nbsp;Victoria Falls River Lodge. We invite you on one of the most intimate, engaging, and unforgettable experiences possible in wild Africa. Come with us!<\/p>","ActivityHighlight":"Game viewing by 4WD vehicle, bush walks, optional mountain biking","TripType":"Small Group Adventure","HeaderImage":"","HeaderImageAltTag":"","ThumbnailImage":"https:\/\/s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com\/wildernesstravel\/trips\/thumb-BOTSZIMB-nehimba-lodge-elephants-tourists-hwange-zimbawe.jpg","MapImage":"https:\/\/s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com\/wildernesstravel\/trips\/botszimb-map.jpg","MapImageAltTag":"","FloatingImage":"","VideoLink":"","GroupSize":"","tripURL":"www.wildernesstravel.com\/trip\/\/Botswana\/botswana-zimbabwe-elephant-safari","ThisYear_Year":"2023","ThisYear_PriceDetails":"<p>$9,195 (7-10 members)<br>$9,695 (4-6 members)<\/p>","ThisYear_PriceDetails2":"<p>Single supplement: $1,395 *<br>\nInternal airfare: $525 (subject to change)<br><br>\n*Please Note: Due to limited accommodations at Jozibanini Camp, single travelers will share for three nights on this itinerary. Botswana's Chobe National Park is the world's busiest elephant corridor, but we'll also be on the lookout for leopard, lion, spotted hyena, jackal, and giraffe. A flight brings us to Nehimba Lodge in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, home to some of the highest concentrations of elephant on the planet, some of whom visit our lodge's lively waterhole. This area is also lion-rich and we have it to ourselves as we explore its mopane woodland and sand river environment.
The open-air Elephant Express rail car brings us to Camelthorn Lodge in southeastern Hwange. Game viewing by 4WD vehicle has us on the lookout for elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and impala. We'll also visit the rhino sanctuary built on community land and guarded by an anti-poaching unit.
At Jozibanini, game walks let us track the fauna of southern Hwange, including the African painted dog, and we'll visit St. Joseph's School, with its enthusiastic students eager to welcome visitors. Our camp's look-up blind brings unique views of elephants, and we'll sleep under the stars in the most remote camp in southern Africa.
We fly to Victoria Falls for a tour of the falls and sundowner cruise on the Zambezi. Depart on Day 12.

    Accommodations

Listed below are our signature accommodations for this trip. Although it is highly unlikely, we may make substitutions when necessary.

    Ilala Lodge

    Day 1 (1 night)

The family-operated Ilala Lodge is a relaxing hotel with an ideal location just minutes from spectacular Victoria Falls. Perfectly manicured gardens and thatched roofs set the scene as you are welcomed into the open-air lobby. Guest rooms have nice beds and all rooms have access to the central garden area. There is a pool if you wish to take a refreshing dip, or you can unwind on your patio. The award-winning Palm Restaurant is also located at the hotel, which offers views of the falls. Keep an eye out for local wildlife—warthogs and impala are known to graze on the hotel's lawn.

    Nehimba Lodge

    Days 2-3 (2 nights)

Raised thatched tent chalets arcing around a watering hole make Nehimba Lodge a spectacular place to witness elephants and other animals drink and play in northern Hwange National Park. Whether you come during the green or dry season, Nehimba's location within the park offers fantastic opportunities to view a wide variety of birdlife like giant eagle owl, Burchell's sandgrouse, and red-billed francolin, and possibly see the famous elephant hunting lions that prowl this part of the park. Private, enclosed outdoor showers are attached to each chalet, and all have beautiful open-beam thatched ceilings and verandas overlooking the watering hole. For a refreshing dip, relax at the lodge's pool, and with luck, have an up-close encounter with elephants—they're known to come right up to the pool's edge!

    Camelthorn Lodge

    Days 4-6 (3 nights)

Tucked in the forested fringes of southern Hwange National Park and within the Imvelo Ngamo Rhino Sanctuary, Camelthorn Lodge is the perfect place to experience life in the bush without sacrificing comfort. The main lodge has a community dining area and buffet station for breakfast, yet you can also enjoy your meals beneath the lodge's namesake camelthorn tree. Eight villas are designed to stay cool in the warmer months and cozy during the colder months with tall ceilings, large stone and tiled bathrooms, and each has a private viewing deck with a hammock so you can unwind beneath a canopy of acacia trees, watching an abundance of birdlife—and small woodland creatures—right from your room.

    Jozibanini Camp

    Days 7-9 (3 nights)

Jozibanini Camp is a small, exclusive camp situated within Hwange National Park. Spacious tents are simple and rustic, built on raised wooden decks tucked under camelthorn trees. The tents have en suite bathrooms with flush toilets and bucket showers (with hot water!). Dining is informal, situated near a campfire and beneath a canopy of stars. Because of its remote location, you're likely to see wildlife explore all around the camp throughout day. Please note: single travelers will share accommodations at Jozibanini Camp.

    Chobe Water Villas

    Days 10-11 (2 nights)

Set along the edge of the great Chobe River in the Zambezi Region of Namibia, each luxury villa has spectacular views of the wetlands and bushland of Chobe National Park right across the water. As you sit on the deck of your private terrace, watch for huge elephant and buffalo herds grazing on the floodplains, then, in the evening, hear the distant sounds of hippos and the serenade of water waves right under your villa. Rooms are simple and comfortable but elegantly styish. An infinity pool overlooking the river is great for cooling off.

    Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

    Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

    Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

    Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

    Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.
