Overview

Some of the rarest species in the world are found in the fascinating wildlife reserves of eastern India, including the furry, tree-dwelling red panda and the prehistoric-looking one-horned rhino. With Trip Leader Devendra Basnet, an inveterate naturalist who has been leading for WT for 35 years, we'll be immersed in the richness of India's natural habitats each day as we explore from the Himalayan foothills to the grassy savannas of Assam. To look for red pandas, we'll fly from Kolkata to Bagdogra in West Bengal and make our way by road up into the rugged Himalayan landscape of Singalila National Park, which straddles a dramatic ridge on the India-Nepal border. A population of endangered red pandas resides in the forests here, and with our local trackers, we'll look for these beautiful creatures as we hike peaceful trails. We'll also witness Himalayan panoramas from Singalila's high viewpoints. Afterwards, we'll descend into India and unwind in charming Darjeeling, known as the Queen of the Hill Stations. Our next Indian wildlife adventure begins in Kaziranga National Park in the lowlands of Assam. Spread across the floodplains of the great Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga is home to some of the world's last one-horned rhinos, along with a host of other wildlife including tigers and large breeding populations of elephant. This unique journey is limited to just eight people, so early signup is advised.

After an overnight in Kolkata, a short flight brings us to Bagdogra, where we board 4WD vehicles for a drive up to our remote accommodation in the broadleaf forests of Singalila National Park, habitat of the red panda and other fascinating species.
We join professional trackers to hike mountain trails in search of these iconic animals each day. While we're here, we'll also head up to the famous Himalayan overlook at Sandakphu (11,929') for classic Kanchenjunga and Everest views. Our ridgetop accommodation is a conservation hub and a Nepali-style homestay with breathtaking Himalayan views into India on one side and Nepal on the other.
We descend from Singalila and continue to Darjeeling, long the queen of the British hill stations and still exuding Victorian charm. During our days here, we'll ride the narrow-gauge “toy train” and visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Himalayan Zoological Park, with the option of a sunrise visit to the famous Kanchenjunga viewpoint at Tiger Hill.
Descending to the tropical plains of Assam, we check into our wonderful lodge just outside Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Endangered Asian one-horned rhinos are the stars here, but as we explore by 4WD vehicle with our trackers, we'll also be on the lookout for elephant, wild Asiatic water buffalo, and with luck, a glimpse of the elusive Bengal tiger. Depart via Kolkata on Day 12.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. It is a cultural and natural history journey with travel by vehicle with hikes and walks that can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health who has recent hiking experience.
      Review Trip Level Details
On some of our panda-tracking hikes, there may be some rough off-trail footing, so these hikes are best suited for people who have a good sense of balance. There is also some rough road travel on dirt or gravel tracks.
Singalila National Park is at altitudes between 7,000 and 10,000 feet in the foothills of the Himalayas. In spring in Singalila, daytime highs will be in the chilly 50s and 60s, even dropping as low as the 30s at night. There is more precipitation in spring and skies can sometimes be hazy but the rhododendrons should be in beautiful bloom and the stunning tea gardens will be operational. In autumn, daytime highs will be in the 60, with nights in the low 50s, and the Himalayan vistas should be mostly clear. As in all mountain areas, there is always the possibility of rain. In Darjeeling in spring, temperatures will be pleasant, ranging from the 60s to the high 70s, with autumn temperatures ranging between 50°F and 75°F. In Kaziranga National Park in the lowlands of Assam, it will be quite warm, with spring temperatures between 70°F and 85°F and autumn temperatures ranging between 65°F and 80°F, dropping to much cooler at dawn.
We enjoy excellent hotels and a comfortable wildlife lodge on this journey, plus four nights at Shikhar Tarry Lodge, a very simple “homestay-style” accommodation. A recommended clothing and equipment list is provided in our Pre-Departure Booklet, and more detailed description of each accommodation can be found in the “Lodging” section.

In Singalila, the only vehicles available are old-fashioned “vintage” land rovers with limited shocks and suspension systems, which make for bumpy rides on the dirt roads. In Kaziranga, we use open-roof safari vehicles that guarantee everyone a “window” seat and great wildlife viewing opportunities. All other road travel will be in modern and comfortable vehicles—typically a Toyota Innova.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Tracking will involve hiking along a jeep trail as well as going off-trail into the forest as needed on challenging hikes involving bushwhacking through trees and scrambling up and down slippery hillsides. There are an estimated 32 red pandas within the limits of the park. Typically, we'll be up early at 6:00 am to join our trackers, who will have gone out earlier in the morning to find pandas. Once at a panda site, we'll have 30 minutes to 1 hour to get a look at them (they tend to stay high up in the trees so viewing can be difficult). Lunch will be back at
Shikhar Tarry Lodge or served in the field, depending on our location. If sightings are on roads, we will go by vehicle for the sighting. On one of the days we're here, we'll journey up to Sandakphu (11,929'), a famous spot for viewing Himalayan sunrises and sunsets over mighty Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

The red panda (Ailurus fulgens), also known as the fire fox, is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwest China. Its fur is reddish brown, with a shaggy tail and a waddling gait due to its short front legs. Red pandas are typically a bit over two feet long and are tree dwellers. They mainly feed on bamboo, but also eggs, birds, and insects when the opportunity arises. They are solitary animals, active between dawn and dusk. The original “panda” name was given to the red panda before the giant panda of China was known. Once considered to be in bear family, and later in the raccoon family, the red panda is actually now classified in a family of its own: Ailuridae. Other mammals that are known to be in the park are Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, leopard, leopard cat, barking deer, yellow-throated marten, wild boar, pangolin, and pika. Singalila is also known as a birding paradise, with more than 300 species recorded, including exotic species such as blood pheasant and fire-tailed myzornis. Because the region is well watered by the monsoon, over 600 varieties of orchids bloom in Singalila, the largest concentration in any single geographical area in the world. The town and surrounding region share a complex history with Bhutan, Nepal, and Sikkim, having passed from one kingdom to another and finally being annexed by the British empire in 1866. Darjeeling's cool mountain air attracted the colonial British, who made it a favorite summer retreat to escape the tropical heat of the Indian plains.

We'll check into our hotel, then visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, with its rare collection of photographs and climbing equipment used in historic Himalayan ascents of the 20th century. Because Nepal was closed to foreigners until 1950, all Everest expeditions prior to that started from Darjeeling. Tenzing Norgay, who summited Everest in 1953 with Sir Edmund Hillary, became the first Director of Field Training for the institute when it was set up in 1954. On the same property, we'll visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, which features mammals and birds of the higher altitudes. It is difficult for travelers in India to comprehend the traditions and rituals involved in everyday life. As in all travel situations, it is important to observe the local people carefully and use common sense. For example, ask permission before taking a photo, entering a temple, washing at a tap, or touching a baby. You'll almost always find the Indians friendly and helpful. A few guidelines are offered below.

Body Language: When seated, it is not polite to show the bottoms of the feet, and it is especially rude to point them in someone else's direction. Therefore you should not stretch your legs out or cross them with the sole turned up or out. Also, never step over or on any part of a person as this exposes them to the bottom of your feet. The purity of the body is viewed as being the highest at the head, becoming progressively dirtier down to the feet. This also makes patting children or other people on the head ill-mannered. Touching a person of the opposite sex, even on the shoulder or hand, can easily be misinterpreted and it's best to refrain from doing so.
\r
Clothing: Be modest in the way you dress while visiting India. (See Notes on Clothing in this booklet.) Women should wear skirts falling at least to the knee, or pants. Bathing suits, halter tops, and tank tops are considered an unseemly display in India and will embarrass local people. Especially in and around temples, wear long pants or a skirt, and a top that covers the shoulders and upper arms. Men may wear shorts up to mid-thigh, but no shorter. It is permitted for men to rest and sunbathe without a shirt, but it is considered extremely rude for men to walk about bare-chested.

Water: Spring water is considered sacred and is protected by ritual. River and stream water is not subject to these taboos. Many villages have only small springs from which to draw their water. Do not casually take water from these springs. It is best to receive permission from a local person. If there is no one nearby, then follow these guidelines: Use only a very clean utensil to draw water. Do not drink directly from this utensil or from the spring. Do not brush your teeth or wash anything near the spring. Carry water 20 feet or more away from the spring before washing. If the water source becomes polluted by careless practice, the consequences for the village are disastrous.

Shrines: Along almost every street and trail you will find temples and shrines of all sorts. Regardless of their size, they are revered with great devotion. When entering a temple, ask about or observe local practice. In some temples, shoes must be removed. In some, it is forbidden to wear leather of any kind (such as a leather belt) or to eat.

Begging: Begging is a tradition in India and can be difficult for westerners to confront. There are no easy answers as to whether to give small amounts of money to beggars. It is ultimately up to each of you to decide. Children along popular travel routes often ask for candy, pens, or money. Rewarding this behavior sets up a barrage of requests for more, a dependency on products not locally available, and in the case of sweets, an increasing dental problem. We, therefore, ask that you do not give anything to children: no candy, pens, balloons, or money. If you like, you can bring pens, crayons, large felt-tip pens, paper, maps, or postcards to donate to schools we pass along the way.

Homes: Indians are very hospitable and it is common for them to invite travelers into their homes. If your hosts take off their shoes before entering a household or room, do likewise. Inside, cooking and eating areas should be treated with special respect. Avoid going into the hearth unless specifically invited there; it is sacred, and home to a guardian spirit. Do not touch the fire area or dry your shoes by it, and do not point your feet at or burn trash in the fire. Do not touch food or eating utensils used by local people. Also, many Hindus cannot eat food that has been touched by a foreigner, so don't offer anything from your plate.

Air tickets (or E-tickets)

Passport

One other picture ID, such as a driver's license

Expense money

Soft-sided suitcase, with a small padlock (must be unlocked for air travel).

Daypack, large enough for a light jacket, rain gear, water bottle, camera, and other items you want with you during the day.

Small roll-up duffel to carry home purchases if you are an avid shopper, keeping in mind that you may have to pay excess baggage charges if you are over the weight limit.

IMPORTANT! Valuable or essential items such as camera equipment, prescription medications, or hiking boots should always be hand-carried on any flight to avoid loss or damage. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
