What the Trip is Like

This trip is Level 2, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip rating system. It is a luxury camping and lodge safari with game viewing by 4WD vehicle. It can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. On safari, there are some long driving days over rugged dirt tracks.
      Review Trip Level Details

The climate is typical of a semi-desert country. Days are warm to hot and nights are generally cool. Temperatures are modified by the high plateau in the interior and by the cold Benguela Current that runs along the Atlantic coastline. Except for the first few months of the year, the country is generally dry with very little rain.

The best gameviewing is generally during the dry season, between April and October, which also corresponds to the most comfortable season for travel. Days are clear and sunny, with temperatures in the 80sF. Nighttime temperatures may drop near freezing. Only during the hot summer months from November to February does rain occur. During this season, the wildlife tends to scatter significantly, which decreases gameviewing potential, but the birdwatching is excellent.

      Client Testimonials

"What a fabulous trip! The variety in activities and landscapes and places, the people, the food, and of course, the animals! Everyone was so friendly and the accommodations were beyond top notch. Seamless planning by your team. It was the first trip abroad I have ever taken where I just got to be in the moment and enjoy what I was doing instead of having a worry in the back my mlnd about how we were going to get to the next place, whether the hotel had confirmed, whether our guide would really meet us by the coliseum as planned, etc. Thank you!"

      Deborah W.

      Seattle, WA

"Kulala Lodge was my absolute favorite; the warmth of the team there; the beauty of the place and the tours we did; it all adds up to many a beautiful memory."

      Filippo E.

      Brooklyn, NY

"The trip was fantastic! Vincent, our guide, was a true professional, concerned about our every need, as well as efficient and well-informed. We really enjoyed his approach to travel—enjoy and learn at the same time. His knowledge of the people of Namibia and the region as well as the animals we encountered made the trip most enjoyable. We could not have asked for a better travel companion!"

      Kathy M.

      Bayonne, NJ

"Namibia was all that we had hoped for. Otherworldly terrain and desert-adapted species. Each of the camps had their own speciality: architectural design, stargazing bed, cuisine, plunge pool, location, air conditioned tent, watering hole near near camp for excellent viewing, staff, and guides."

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Overnight at lodge near Sossusvlei. each day.

Sossusvlei: The most famous section of Namib Naukluft National Park is Sossusvlei, renowned for its towering apricot-colored sand dunes along the Tsauchab River valley. Sossusvlei itself is actually a brilliant white clay pan set amid these star-shaped, 900-foot-high orange dunes. The dunes form the endpoint of the Tsauchab River, which penetrates the sand sea for some 30 miles before it finally peters out at Sossusvlei. Until the encroaching dunes blocked its course around 60,000 years ago, the Tsauchab River once reached the sea, as ephemeral rivers still do in the northern half of the Namib. Sossusvlei is the biggest of four pans in the vicinity. Another, famous for its gnarled and ghostly camel thorn trees, is Deadvlei, which can be reached on foot over a half-mile of sand. Deadvlei's striking camel-thorn trees, dead for want of water, still stand erect as they once grew. They survived until about 900 years ago when the sand sea finally blocked the river from occasionally flooding the pan.

Sesriem Canyon: Evolved through centuries of erosion by the Tsauchab River, Sesriem Canyon has incised a narrow gorge deep into the surrounding conglomerates, exposing the varying layers of sedimentation deposited over millions of years. The shaded cool depths of the canyon allow pools of water to gather during the rain season and remain for much of the year round. These pools were a vital source of water for early settlers who drew water for their livestock by knotting six (ses) lengths of rawhide thongs (riems) together, hence the canyon and surrounding area became known as Sesriem.

The Namib Desert: The Namib spans the 1,200-mile-long coast of Namibia with some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa, including sweeping expanses of savanna. Mist and fog blown in from the Atlantic carry precious moisture to the Namib in the form of dew, which makes it possible for the growth of an intriguing collection of flora and fauna in this arid habitat. Endemic Namib flora includes welwitchias (Welwitschia mirabilis), rare botanic oddities that hug the ground and have surface roots adapted to absorb moisture from the desert fog (some of the larger specimens are thought to be over 1,000 years old).

After a leisurely breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for a fantastic scenic flight to Damaraland, beginning with an amazing bird's-eye view of Sossusvlei and the great dune sea that stretches to the Skeleton Coast. You then fly north along the coastline (fog permitting) over abandoned mining camps, shipwrecks, Sandwich Harbour, salt pans, and Walvis Bay lagoon before landing at Swakopmund Airport for refueling. From there the flight takes you northeast past Namibia's highest mountain, the Brandberg (8,442') before landing in Damaraland.

A place of incorruptible beauty, Damaraland is a photographer's dream—a dizzying array of geologic formations and magnificent palettes of color splashed over some of the earth's oldest landscapes. You will be met by your private naturalist guide and transferred to Onduli Ridge, named after the resident giraffe of the area.

If time allows, you'll enjoy an afternoon visit to the remarkable rock art at Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage Site (or you may visit the following day). Strewn over a hillside among flat-topped mountains of red sandstone, Twyfelfontein's boulders and slabs of red sandstone hold some 2,500 prehistoric engravings that depict wildlife, animal spoor, and abstract motifs. This is perhaps the largest and finest collection of petroglyphs in Africa. The engravings show animals such as elephant, giraffe, kudu, lion, rhinoceros, springbok, zebra, and ostrich that once used to drink from a spring at the bottom of the hill. In some cases, human footprints were engraved in the sandstone instead of hooves or paws. Stone tools and other artifacts found at Twyfelfontein suggest that hunter-gatherers occupied the site over a period of perhaps 7,000 years. The engravings lie along two circular routes, one an hour's climb and the other about 40 minutes longer. You'll also explore Burnt Mountain with its fiery colors that appear at sunrise and sunset, and Organ Pipes, a geologic wonder that has the appearance of magnificent hand-carved columns etched into ancient hillsides. Be sure to check the expiration date. Your passport must be valid for six months after your date of exit from Africa.

South Africa: to enter South Africa (even if you are only in transit through a South African airport), your passport must contain at least three completely blank visa pages. It is very important that the blank pages say “Visas” at the top. The last few pages of your passport, which say “Amendments and Endorsements,” and the final page of your passport, which may not have a page number, are not considered to be legitimate visa pages. This is an important official requirement, and you can be denied entry to South Africa or other southern African countries if you do not have the correct number and type of passport pages. We strongly recommend you have even more blank pages before departure, to ensure you still have three completely blank visa pages for your entry to the final country on your trip, such as South Africa. You can request a new passport through US Passport Services Office (the service of adding pages for visas was discontinued as of January 1, 2016) or use a visa service agency, which can take care of your passport renewal and expedite the process, if needed. On arrival in Johannesburg or Windhoek, you should exchange around $300-350 per person into South African Rand. This will ensure you have enough to pay for beverages and leave tips in local currency. The Rand is accepted in Namibia and is preferable because Namibian currency is hard to exchange back into dollars at the end of the trip. Traveler's checks are not accepted. Visa and MasterCard are usually accepted in all but the more remote areas (Diners and American Express are often not accepted). Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as lensrentals.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
