After exploring Kathmandu, we fly to Pokhara, then on to Jomsom, and head up to the ancient village of Marpha, set along the Kali Gandaki gorge on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
We head to Kagbeni and explore its ancient alleys and entrance gates, then visit the holy site of Muktinath, one of the most venerated pilgrimage sites in the Himalaya. Panoramic views include the great Kali Gandaki Gorge and the steep, ice-capped peaks that frame it. Near the village of Chusang, we visit ancient, man-made cave-temples carved into red, orange, and silver cliffs, the cave-temple at Mentsi Lakhang, as well as the wonderful fortified village of Tethang, with its medieval atmosphere. Our road journey continues as we cross over the Nye La, a mountain pass, to reach the small settlement of Gami, with its beautiful mani walls (rock walls of intricately carved prayer stones). We'll enjoy stunning and wide-ranging views of the arid Tibetan plateau landscape and snow-capped mountains all around us.
In fabled Lo Manthang, Mustang’s walled capital, we’ll meet local artisans who are restoring the treasury of 15th century Buddhist murals in the town’s monasteries. They were trained by a restoration artist from Italy, with funds from the American Himalayan Foundation, which WT supports. At the annual Tiji Festival, held in the courtyard of Mustang’s royal palace, we watch masked dances and hear the sound of Tibetan horns in the town square as the story of “the chasing of the demons” is told.
Near the Tibetan border, we explore settlements around Charang, where there are thousands of man-made caves. One of our hikes brings us to little-known Tashi Kabum, a 14th century site that houses some of the richest wall and ceiling paintings in all of Mustang. On Day 15, we head to Pokhara by road, fly to Kathmandu, and depart on Day 16.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is Level 4, Moderate to Strenuous, according to our trip grading system. It is an adventurous overland journey with day hikes of up to five hours, with accommodations ranging from comfortable hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara to basic lodges in Mustang. Our activities center on hiking and exploring cultural and historic sites.
      Review Trip Level Details

In general, you should be fit and be able to be on your feet 4 to 6 hours a day on this journey. Our walks and hikes are on mountain trails that involves ascents and descents of up to a thousand feet. All participants should be in good shape and enjoy mountain trails. The exploration of the monasteries and day hikes normally involve some up and down walking, which at high altitudes and in dry conditions, can feel strenuous.

For your own enjoyment, we recommend you make a special effort to be in good physical condition. Daily brisk walking is an excellent preparatory exercise. While in Mustang, we will be at altitudes between 9,000 and 13,678 feet. Individuals vary widely in their physical response to high altitude.

Mustang is a dry, high-altitude realm, like Tibet. The weather will likely be quite comfortable, with blue skies most days, but nights can be very cold. At high altitude, weather is always unpredictable, and the effect of the wind-chill factor can create extra-cold conditions. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, it will be hot and humid, with a high chance of rain, since our journey is set close to the annual monsoon season (but a great time to be in Mustang, which is drier, as it is the rain shadow north of the main Himalayan range!). In Mustang, there is also a strong wind in the late morning and afternoons on most days, which can kick up the dust on the trail. All participants should be equipped with good wind-proof jackets with a hood and good dusk masks. The sun is very intense at these high altitudes and care should be taken to use sun screen as well as a good hat with a full brim for sun protection.
Our lodges in Mustang are rustic but comfortable, owned and operated by local Mustang families. They are a wonderful way to experience local hospitality and gain an insight into the lives of the local people. There are basic toilet and washing facilities, some with Western-style toilets and some with squat-style toilets. Hot water may not be available at every lodge. We provide you with good quality sleeping bags with liners for extra comfort at all of the lodges. Our crew will be equipped with camping gear in case we need it to camp. One of the wonderful benefits of staying in these lodges is the chance to interact with local Mustang families, enjoy cultural encounters with these welcoming mountain people, see them milking their yaks, churning butter, weaving, and going about the everyday chores of traditional life in a remote Himalayan village. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, we'll stay in comfortable hotels with modern amenities in central locations.
Our own experienced cook crew will accompany us in Mustang. The crew is part of the renowned Wilderness Travel trekking staff, and all our meals at the lodges will be prepared by them, though we may also share meals made by the lodge from time to time. Our cooks are extremely well trained and offer hygienically prepared meals featuring both Nepali and western-style dishes. Meals will be served in the lodge's dining room. Our drinking water is always boiled and treated. Washing water is put out before every meal so you can wash your hands before eating—a key to keeping healthy! Breakfast is normally a light meal of porridge or granola, with hot milk, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, or cookies. Lunches may include potatoes, eggs, curried vegetables, cheese, local-style breads, fruit, tea, hot chocolate or a fruit drink. Dinner is typically soup and a main course such as a noodle dish, or meat or vegetable stew, depending on what is available in local villages. Dessert on trek is usually canned or fresh fruit.

Road travel in Mustang is mostly on graveled, dusty roads, and on some days, road travel is long. Good dust masks are recommended, especially for those who are allergic to dust.

This is a vehicle-based overland trip with day hikes on most days. We will travel along the newly constructed highway (work is still going on in many places on this road) and make daily hikes on trails off the highway to explore interesting sites, temples, monasteries, and villages. This way, we avoid hiking on the dusty roads and hike only where no vehicles are or where the traffic is sparse. Hiking distances are normally measured in hours not miles, since the terrain and prevailing conditions have such an effect on how long a hike feels.

On a typical day, we wake-up around 6:30 am. After breakfast, we set off by vehicle, normally a short distance of an hour or so, to the trailhead where we start our hike. Our hikes vary from around 4 to 6 hours, depending on the trail chosen for the day. There is always a guide in the lead and a “sweeper” who trails behind the slowest hiker to ensure that no one is lost on the trail. We ask you not to hike ahead of the leader because trails are often not well-marked.

It is not uncommon to experience mild headaches or sleeplessness for a day or two when you first arrive at high altitude. Most people gradually adjust within a few days. This itinerary provides time for acclimatization, but you must pace yourself. Go slowly and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Officially part of Nepal since the 18th century, Mustang is actually a time capsule of ancient Tibetan heritage. This stunning high-altitude realm of medieval towns, cave shrines, ochre cliffs, and deep canyons under an infinite blue sky was once a vital part of the trade route from Tibet to Nepal and India. All that changed with the Chinese takeover of Tibet in the 1950s, when the border was sealed. Mustang was left isolated for decades, explored by just a few hardy trekkers who ventured up the Kali Gandaki gorge. With our Himalayan expert Devendra Basnet, we'll experience Mustang's mystical beauty on daily hikes and 4WD explorations, with overnights in simple, yet welcoming lodges. A wonderful benefit of our stays in these lodges is the opportunity for authentic cultural interactions, learning about our host families' lives: seeing them milk their yaks, churning butter, weaving yak wool, and going about the everyday chores of life in these incredibly remote Himalayan villages. In Mustang's walled capital, Lo Manthang, where the crown prince of Mustang is in residence, we'll visit 15th century monasteries where the masterpiece Buddhist wall frescoes are being restored by the local people, trained by a restoration artist from Italy with the support of the American Himalayan Foundation—an organization that Wilderness Travel contributes to. Please realize, however, that the road is rough, dusty, and unpaved, but we are amply rewarded as we explore a thriving Tibetan culture in a breathtaking landscape. Heading northward, we'll take a day hike from the village of Sangmoche to the sacred Chungtse Rangchung cave-temple, where the great guru Padma Sambhava is said to have meditated. Local people and Buddhist pilgrims from afar pay their respects to this temple by walking the kora (circular trail) around it. Restoration masters from Italy have trained over 100 local men and women, bringing back an ancient skill that once thrived here. We are proud to support this project that is turning farmers into artists and assuring a renaissance of traditional mural painting arts. In the afternoon, we witness the first processions and festivities of the annual Tiji Festival, hosted by the crown prince of Mustang and held in the courtyard of Mustang's royal palace. Tiji celebrates the deity Dorje Jono, who battled his demon father to save Mustang from destruction. Since physical fitness does not confer any protection or facilitate acclimatization, it is impossible to predict how you will adapt to the altitude. The greatest protection is avoiding rapid ascents and allowing time for acclimatization. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is not uncommon at the altitudes reached in the high Himalayas. Early symptoms of AMS include headache, nausea, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, vomiting, dry cough, irregular breathing, shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling of the ankles and eyelids.

It is not uncommon to experience some of these symptoms when you first arrive at high altitude and then have them decrease in severity within a few days. It is important that you inform your Trek Leader immediately of any symptoms or discomfort, however minor, so that he or she can help you monitor the situation. While acclimatizing, avoid pushing yourself too hard, however physically fit you may be or feel. Pace yourself comfortably, rest often. You may find that you hike more slowly than others in the group, or more slowly than you are used to.

Proper hydration is essential at high altitude. You need to drink much more fluid than you are used to. Try to drink even if you're not feeling thirsty. Avoid caffeine, which is a diuretic, and avoid alcohol, which is dehydrating. Cut down on salt. Your appetite will probably decrease, but it is still important to eat well (especially carbohydrates), even if you're not feeling well. Sleeping pills and narcotic painkillers (such as codeine) should not be used at altitude because they depress respiration.

Severe progressions of AMS are high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Symptoms of HAPE include breathlessness that continues at rest, severe cough with watery or bloody sputum, and noisy, bubbling breath. Symptoms of HACE include extreme weariness, vomiting, severe headache, staggering walk, and changes in behavior. If any such symptoms develop, you must notify the Trek Leader immediately and descend to a lower altitude at once.

Diamox (Acetazolamide)
The prescription drug Diamox is now accepted as an effective prophylactic against the early symptoms of altitude sickness. Consult with your physician for directions concerning proper usage and dosage. You can also read more about it at the Himalayan Rescue Association's website. It is difficult for travelers in Nepal to comprehend fully the practices, traditions and rituals involved in everyday life. A seemingly innocent act could be seen as offensive by the local inhabitants. Some situations may be quite confusing. If you will accept this, and take a relaxed attitude, you will enjoy your trip much more. Your local guide is experienced with the types of problems encountered in Nepal, and will no doubt counsel you on Asia's most important virtue: patience.

As in all travel situations, it is important to observe the local people carefully and use common sense. Ask before taking a photo, entering a temple, washing at a tap, or touching a baby. If you are in doubt about any of these situations, ask a local person. The Nepalese have a phrase: “God visits your home in the form of a guest.” You'll almost always find the Nepalese friendly and helpful, as they honor this adage.

Greetings
When two people meet in Nepal, they press their palms together in front of their chest and say "namaste." The formal translation is “I acknowledge the divine light which shines from within you,” and this word is used for both meeting and parting. To greet someone is a sign of respect to that person. So it is proper for the traveler to say namaste first to elders, monks, priests, and people of higher government rank. If you deem the person to be of very high status, use the more formal "namaskar." It is not improper to instigate the greeting to children, field workers, or other people thought to be of lower status, but it is considered more correct if they salute you first. You may find these people either too shy or bewildered at your appearance to muster a greeting. If you feel this is the case, greet them and you will receive a warm, somewhat surprised greeting in return.

Body Language
The Nepalese believe the body is sacred, and there are many taboos involving the body. As there is sometimes little toilet paper, personal hygiene practice is to cleanse oneself with the left hand. Therefore, nothing should be offered or accepted with the left hand only. The most polite way to give or receive an object is to reach out with the right hand while touching the left hand to the right elbow. A more common way is to extend both hands together.

When seated, it is not polite to show the bottoms of the feet, and it is especially rude to point them in someone else's direction. Therefore you should not stretch your legs out or cross them with the sole turned up or out. Also, never step over or on any part of a person as this exposes them to the bottom of your feet. The body is viewed as being cleanest at the head and becoming progressively dirtier down to the feet.

This also makes patting children or other people on the head ill-mannered. Touching a person of the opposite sex, even on the shoulder or hand, is easily misinterpreted.

Clothing
The Nepalese wear a wide assortment of clothing signifying tribal group, caste, religion, work, or marital status. The most important feature to remember is that a man dressed in white is mourning the death of a family member. He goes through many purifying rituals, and no one is allowed to touch him. It is also improper to comment upon a garment or piece of jewelry that a person is wearing. This may make the wearer feel they must present that article to the admirer.

Water
Drinking water, especially from springs, is considered sacred, and is protected by ritual. River and stream water is not subject to these taboos. Many villages, especially those on high slopes, have only small springs from which to draw their water. Usually these springs have an area of uncut forest above them and religious objects nearby. Statues, small temples, shrines, carved stones, printed prayer flags and colorful cloth may adorn the immediate area. Do not casually take water from these springs. It is best to receive permission from a local person. If the water source becomes polluted by careless practice, the consequences for the village are disastrous

Shrines and Temples
Along almost every street and trail you will find temples and shrines of all sorts. Regardless of their size, they are revered with great devotion. Always keep these structures on your right side, walking around them in a clockwise direction. The same applies to mani stones, the slates carved with inscriptions and placed in piles, walls, or along the side of a building, and to prayer flags. It is alright to touch stones or flags, but do not sit on them or place any other object on them.

At some trail crossroads you'll find a small crossed bamboo form with colorful threads woven in a design, with flour dumplings on the ground nearby. Do not touch or step on these, and keep them on your right hand side. If you find any unusual object whose significance you are unsure of, it's best to treat it as one with religious significance.

When entering a temple, ask about or observe local practice. In some, shoes must be removed. In some it is forbidden to wear leather of any kind, or to eat. Always leave a small donation (10 to 50 rupees).

Homes
Nepalese are very hospitable and it is common for them to invite travelers into their homes. Most Nepalese take off their shoes before entering a household or room; if your hosts do this, do likewise, making sure your shoes are placed neatly side by side; flipped or crossed shoes are thought to cause bad luck. Do not step on the threshold or stand with one foot inside and the other out, as this allows bad spirits to enter.

Inside, cooking and eating areas should be treated with special respect. Avoid the hearth unless specifically invited there; it is sacred, and home to a guardian spirit. Do not touch the fire area, adjust, blow on, dry your shoes by, point your feet at or burn trash in the fire. Do not touch food or eating utensils used by local people. Most Hindus cannot eat food that has been touched by a foreigner, so don't offer anything from your plate.

These rules may be bewildering in their complexity, but if you use common sense, ask questions when in doubt, and emulate the Nepalese (except when they are worshiping or performing rituals), then you will make few mistakes. Avail yourself of your Trek Leader's expertise in local customs and you will be rewarded for your efforts by a more meaningful cultural experience.

Begging
Children along popular trekking routes often ask for candy (“mithai,” “bonbon,” “chocolate”), pens or money. Rewarding this behavior sets up a barrage of requests for more, a dependency on products not locally available, and an increasing dental problem in a country which has practically no dentists. We therefore ask that you do not give anything to children on treks: no candy, pens, balloons, or money. Instead, we encourage you to contribute to the local community and its children by donating to monasteries and schools, which are often in need of repairs, educational materials, and so on. This can be a monetary contribution, or you can bring pens, crayons, large felt-tip pens, paper, maps, or postcards, to donate to schools we pass along the way.
Wilderness Travel strongly supports the concept of responsible tourism, and encourages all of our groups to be sensitive to their role in the changing, fragile environment of the Himalaya.

","Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Header_2":"
Acclimatization
","Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Text_2":"
It is not uncommon to experience mild headaches or sleeplessness for a day or two when you first arrive at high altitude. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well.
