Mumbai (formerly Bombay) was the first part of India to be colonized by the British. Today it is a dynamic powerhouse of business, trade, and industry, including its film industry (“Bollywood”), the largest in the world. With your private guide, visit the Elephanta Caves, a cluster of rock-cut caves carved in the 6th to 8th centuries, and tour the city, including the Gateway of India, the city's iconic landmark overlooking the sea.
On a privately guided visit, explore the cave temples of Ellora and Ajanta, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Built between the 5th and 10th centuries, Ellora's temples are carved into volcanic rock and display elaborate bas-reliefs and sculptures depicting images of the Buddha, other deities, and garden scenes, as well as cathedral-like halls and courtyards. The Ajanta cave temples and monasteries, beautifully situated in a wooded ravine in the Waghora Valley, are hollowed out of granite cliffs. They contain richly ornamented sculptures and are noted for the fresco-like murals depicting Buddhist legends and deities.
Kochi (formerly Cochin), set in a stunning location along the Arabian Sea, has a long history as a trading city. With your private guide, explore the old Fort Kochi and Mattancherry districts, with their interesting cultural monuments reflecting a diverse heritage, view Kochi's trademark fishing nets along the waterfront, and enjoy a traditional Parimaral meal, typical of the intriguing diversity of South Indian cuisine. On one evening, enjoy a performance of traditional arts and dance forms of Kerala.
Aboard your deluxe, private houseboat, cruise through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, a beautiful region nestled between the sea and the hills of Kochi. An overnight journey through this quiet region reveals the picturesque rural life of Kerala people working their fields with water buffaloes, fishing with nets from traditional longboats, and washing their clothes at the water's edge.
Travel through beautiful tea, spice, and rubber plantations to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghat Mountains. At least 260 species of birds have been recorded at Periyar reserve. This afternoon, enjoy a visit to a private spice garden nearby as well as the local spice market, or enjoy a walk on a forested trail in the reserve.
In Madurai, join your guide for a visit to the Shri Meenakshi-Sundareshwarar temple, a fortress-like structure that is breathtakingly baroque with its abundance of gods, goddesses, rearing horses, and mythical figures. Visiting the temple is a truly intense and fascinating experience, with a constant flow of devout worshipers and a profusion of colorful flowers and puja offerings (ritual worship or devotional offerings). You will also visit the 17th century Thirumalai Nayak Palace, with its interesting blend of Dravidian, Islamic, and European styles. Fly to Chennai (formerly known as Madras) for departure on Day 11.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Here lies a fine cluster of rock-cut caves carved in the 6th to 8th centuries during the Golden Age of the Guptas and inspired by the worship of Shiva. Of particular note among the beautifully executed sculptures is the figure of Maheshmurthy or Trimurthi, which represents the three aspects of Shiva: the Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer. The 15-foot-high, three-headed bust was hewn from a single rock. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of the city including the historic synagogues, the Gateway of India, the city's iconic landmark overlooking the sea that was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the Manj Bhawan, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits here from 1917 to 1934, and the Crawford Market, one of the most famous in Mumbai. They city thrived and grew quickly, and by the 20th century was the most prosperous city in the nation. Mahatma Gandhi used Mumbai as his base in the struggle for independence, and it was the scene of the farewell to the Raj, when British troops passed through the Gateway of India in 1948. The Kailasanatha, a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the Ellora complex and an outstanding example of Dravidian art. This intriguing old city has a stunning location on a series of islands along the Arabian Sea as well as a long and colorful history as a trading city. The harbors of the Malabar coast were a favorite port of call in the spice trade for two thousand years, attracting a mix of Arab, Christian, and Jewish settlers and traders from the Middle East. In the 14th century, a flood created Kochi's safe harbor and soon made it the busiest port on the Malabar Coast. In the early 15th century, the Europeans arrived, and the Rajas of Kochi who were keen to expand the spice trade welcomed them. First came the Portuguese, and later the Dutch. The British arrived thereafter and eventually took control of the lucrative spice trade. By 1800, Kochi was part of the British Madras Presidency.

The afternoon is at leisure. You may wish to relax from the day's travels or prefer to head out on your own for an afternoon walk through the Broadway market at Emakulam, in the new part of the city, where shops offering beautiful textiles and jewelry lie alongside vegetable markets and wholesale provision stores. This area includes India's first Christian church, the St. Francis, which may have been built by Franciscan friars from Portugal. The original wooden structure burned and was rebuilt in stone in the 16th century. In Kochi's historic Mattancherry district, you will visit the Mattancherry Palace, locally known as the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese and given as a gift to the Rajas of Kochi. Its exterior is not notable but its interior is adorned with fantastic and richly detailed 16th century murals that illustrate stories from the Ramayana, one of Hinduism's epic stories. The Mattancherry district bustles with traders in tea, jute, rubber, and spices, and is the area called Jewtown, where the Pardesi Synagogue, founded in 1568, still exists. Jews were a respected part of Keralan life until the arrival of the Portuguese, who brought the persecution of Jews with them. Many Jewish names are seen on houses and businesses in this district, but most of Kochi's Jews immigrated to Israel in the 1950s. You will also view Kochi's dramatic traditional Chinese nets. Locally, these nets are known as cheenavala, and they are considered the trademark of Kochi. Outside of China, the nets are found only in Kochi, and legend has it that they were brought here by merchants of Kublai Khan.

For lunch, enjoy a traditional Parimaral meal with your guide at an outdoor restaurant. Parimaral is the traditional arrangement of a meal—rice, four to five vegetarian dishes, condiments, curries—all beautifully presented on a large banana leaf (vazhaillai). The Parimaral is typical of the diversity of South Indian cuisine, and the actual choice and placement of the foods on the leaf are highly ritualistic and indicate the origin of the chef's family, as well as its status and wealth.

In the early evening, enjoy a performance of traditional arts and dance forms of Kerala, including the Kathakali, the most well known and celebrated of the dances featured in the performance. Kathakali is a classical art form, a highly stylized Indian dance-drama that originated in Kerala in the late 1500s and is known for its rhythmic drumming, elaborate costumes and fantastical makeup of characters, detailed hand and facial gestures, and synchronous body movements to the music. The Kathakali presents classical Hindu stories and plays that are religious in nature, including the Mahabarat, Ramayana, and the ancient scriptures known as the Puranas. After the performance, return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
A morning drive of approximately 1.5-2 hours brings you to the romantic port town of Alleppey (known now as Alappuzha), once one of the best known seaports of the Malabar Coast. On arrival, board your deluxe, private houseboat for a relaxing cruise through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, a beautiful region nestled between the sea and the hills of Kochi. A journey through this quiet region reveals the picturesque rural life of Kerala people working their fields with water buffaloes, fishing with nets from traditional longboats, and washing their clothes at the water's edge. It is difficult for travelers in India to comprehend the traditions and rituals involved in everyday life. As in all travel situations, it is important to observe the local people carefully and use common sense. For example, ask permission before taking a photo, entering a temple, washing at a tap, or touching a baby. You'll almost always find the Indians friendly and helpful. A few guidelines are offered below.

Body Language: When seated, it is not polite to show the bottoms of the feet, and it is especially rude to point them in someone else's direction. Therefore you should not stretch your legs out or cross them with the sole turned up or out. Also, never step over or on any part of a person as this exposes them to the bottom of your feet. The purity of the body is viewed as being the highest at the head, becoming progressively dirtier down to the feet. This also makes patting children or other people on the head ill-mannered. Touching a person of the opposite sex, even on the shoulder or hand, can easily misinterpreted and it's best to refrain from doing so.

Clothing: Be modest in the way you dress while visiting India. (See Notes on Clothing in this booklet.) Women should wear skirts falling at least to the knee, or pants. Bathing suits, halter tops, and tank tops are considered an unseemly display in India and will embarrass local people. Especially in and around temples, wear long pants or a skirt, and a top that covers the shoulders and upper arms. Men may wear shorts up to mid-thigh, but no shorter. It is permitted for men to rest and sunbathe without a shirt, but it is considered extremely rude for men to walk about bare-chested.

Water: Spring water is considered sacred and is protected by ritual. River and stream water is not subject to these taboos. Many villages have only small springs from which to draw their water. Do not casually take water from these springs. It is best to receive permission from a local person. If there is no one nearby, then follow these guidelines: Use only a very clean utensil to draw water. Do not drink directly from this utensil or from the spring. Do not brush your teeth or wash anything near the spring. Carry water 20 feet or more away from the spring before washing. If the water source becomes polluted by careless practice, the consequences for the village are disastrous.

Shrines: Along almost every street and trail you will find temples and shrines of all sorts. Regardless of their size, they are revered with great devotion. When entering a temple, ask about or observe local practice. In some temples, shoes must be removed. In some it is forbidden to wear leather of any kind (such as a leather belt) or to eat.

Begging: Begging is a tradition in India, and can be difficult for westerners to confront. There are no easy answers as to whether to give small amounts of money to beggars. It is ultimately up to each of you to decide. Children along popular travel routes often ask for candy, pens, or money. Rewarding this behavior sets up a barrage of requests for more, a dependency on products not locally available, and in the case of sweets, an increasing dental problem. We therefore ask that you do not give anything to children: no candy, pens, balloons, or money. If you like, you can bring pens, crayons, large felt-tip pens, paper, maps, or postcards to donate to schools we pass along the way.

Homes: Indians are very hospitable and it is common for them to invite travelers into their homes. If your hosts take off their shoes before entering a household or room, do likewise. Inside, cooking and eating areas should be treated with special respect. Avoid going into the hearth unless specifically invited there; it is sacred, and home to a guardian spirit. Do not touch the fire area or dry your shoes by it, and do not point your feet at or burn trash in the fire. Do not touch food or eating utensils used by local people. Also, many Hindus cannot eat food that has been touched by a foreigner, so don't offer anything from your plate.

Air tickets (or E-tickets)

Visa for India

Passport

One other picture ID, such as a driver's license

Expense money

Standard hard or soft-sided suitcase, with small padlock (must be unlocked for air travel in the US). For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as lensrentals.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
