From Bilbao on the Basque coast, head to the plains of the Castilian Plateau to hike classic pilgrim trails laced with history. Your route leads through farmlands between the medieval city of Burgos and stunning León, with plenty of art and architecture to be seen along the way. Overnights are in charming Burgos, capital of Old Castile for 500 years, Carrión de los Condes, with its 12th century Romanesque churches, and the engaging pilgrim city of Leon, whose towering Gothic cathedral is one of the finest in Europe.
Near Spain's remote border with Portugal, hike in the mountain landscape of Sanabria Lake Natural Park and along the shores of crystal-clear Lago de Sanabria, the largest glacial lake in Spain. Overnights are at a parador in the hilltop village of Puebla de Sanabria, overlooking the Tera River Valley.
Hike into Portugal on a trail into Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, Portugal's only national park, and along the remarkable Via Nova, a stone-paved Roman road. After an overnight in the elegant city of Braga, walk in the idyllic Douro River vineyards, with wine-tasting and lunch at a traditional quinta en route to the lovely town of Pinhão. To get from Pinhão to Porto, take a boat ride along the Douro River. In Porto on the coast, enjoy walking tour of highlights and hidden gems, and depart on Day 10.

Day 1 (1 night)
The Hotel Carlton, built in 1919, is an impressive Beaux Arts monument in the grand style of its era. It is centrally located in the Old Town on Plaza de Federico Moyúa and just a short walk to the Guggenheim Museum. The hotel was the seat of the Basque government during the Spanish Civil War.
AC Hotel Burgos
Day 2 (1 night)
The AC hotel has an excellent location in a pedestrian zone on a riverside boulevard in the heart of Burgos. It's close to the Gothic cathedral and several of the city's lively tapas bars. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Beaux-Arts style building has been excellently restored. Guest rooms are modern, clean, and spacious.
Monasterio San Zoilo
Day 3 (1 night)
An atmospheric Benedictine monastery in a serene country setting, this historic property has been artfully transformed into a unique hotel. It was founded in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 16th century with the addition of a beautiful Gothic cloister. It is still church-owned and has a functioning church within it. There are two restaurants, a lovely open courtyard, and an excellent staff.
Parador de León
Day 4 (1 night)
A former pilgrim hostel, this parador is one of the architectural jewels of the city of León. It was originally constructed in the 16th century to house the western headquarters for the Military Order of Saint James, and its carved facade is absolutely extraordinary. Modern amenities include a bar and restaurant, but the sense of the past is ever present.
Parador de Puebla de Sanabria
Days 5-6 (2 nights)
Fantastic views and a relaxing oasis await you at this modern parador, set in a lovely location overlooking the historic town of Puebla de Sanabria. Guest rooms are well appointed and comfortable. After a day's hike, take a dip in the outdoor pool or relax on the terrace with a cool drink.
Vila Galé Collection
Day 7 (1 night)
Dating to the early 1500s, this hotel was once a pilgrim hospice and Templar convent. It has been enlarged and modernized, and has been beautifully renovated—even retaining its original vaulted ceilings. Its prime location in the middle of town makes it a convenient base for exploring Braga's many historical and religious monuments. Trip Levels
With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.
Level 1 – Easiest
Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.
Level 2 – Easy to Moderate
Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.
Level 3 – Moderate
Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

- Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin, are Trip Level 3.
Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous
Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.
Level 5 – Strenuous
Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.
Level 6 – Very Strenuous
Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.
